An interesting take on a recent survey conducted by the Ponemon Institute on behalf of Symantec. It would be fair to say that we share some of the author's cynicism, however it is a real issue - although with many varying degrees. And yes, there are vendors we work with whose products can help counter these 'threats' (e.g. Imprivata, SanDisk)!
An interesting comment from the author; "One could also argue that laid-off employees aren't as big a threat as those who remain on the inside with access to data they can sneak off to black marketers offering cash for proprietary data one can only obtain if they're still on the inside."
And of course there are plenty of examples of employees using unsupervised or uncontrolled insider privilege to do much more than simply sell off data to the black market. Think of Société Générale, or more recently Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and (the slightly amusing) Radio Advertising Bureau.
